Thomas Jefferson was the third U.S. President, principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and one of the most influential founders of the United States.
Major events during Jefferson's presidency include the Louisiana Purchase (1803), the Embargo Act of 1807, and the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–1806).
Jefferson also served as Governor of Virginia, first U.S. Secretary of State, and second Vice-President. In addition, he was a consummate politician and statesman, and an ardent agriculturalist, horticulturist, architect, etymologist, archaeologist, mathematician, cryptographer, surveyor, paleontologist, author, inventor, and violinist.
